“Companionship - good or bad does it matter ? ” averred Subhash, the brother. He believed that man creates his own image through his own intrinsic merits. It hardly matters what company he keeps: or to which family he belongs.
His sister complained “You have expressed your views. But have you ever considered my predicament of reconciling your views with that of our father? “
Father pandit Devdhar Sharma was a reputed lawyer of the town. He was proud of the reputation of his family which he nourished. Hence it was but natural that he should uphold traditional views about culture and manners. He did not want his son Subhash to be friendly with Ranga who because of his conduct and business had earned a lot of notoriety.
But Subhash was sentimental. He was a poet and fore thinker. He wanted to judge what is good or bad by his own experience; he refused to be guided by what others said, Ranga was his friend since school days-happy go-lucky, careless and free. Ranga offered him his hand of friendship and Subhash grabbed it enthusiastically. Suffocated by his father’s insistence on strict discipline and family traditions he found pleasure only in the company of ranga. Torn between the attention and regard for brother and father was Lakshmi. Her every effort to reconcile them failed. She could not talk to her father, she could not convince her brother. After their mother’s death, it was Lakshmi who had to look after her brother and save him from all hardship. To save her brother sometimes she had to hide the truth from her own father. And one day, just when newly married Lakshmi was leaving for her husband’s home, she was forced to give her necklace which was part of her dowry, to a Pathan to pay off Subhash's debts.
This sacrifice on the part of the sister shook Subhash to the core of his heart. He made every effort to secure the necklace. Ultimately he could secure it; but before he could deliver it to his sister, it was stolen from his pocket.
Whenever her husband referred to the necklace Lakshmi got worried, but how long could she hide the truth. When the truth was known Lakshmi was forced to return to her father’s home.
What happened then? what did Subhash do to bring back happiness to his beloved sister? see it in this story of brother’s and sister’s deep love for each other, the story of their hopes and frustrations, their happiness and suffering. Their story is the story of today, the story of today’s living characters reflecting today’s society.
